Sometimes I come across an inspiring image on pinterest or instagram that makes stop and audibly say “woah.” 99% of the time, these photos were shot on film. For the longest time, I’ve admired film photographers but always thought that was something that a special kind of photographer did, someone who was more creative and knowledgeable. But I’ve been reading the book Big Magic and Elizabeth Gilbert has lent me a little bit of courage to just go for it. It has still been scary and I still look down at my screen after I take the shot to see if my lighting is right only to realize that I won’t see this image for at least a week. But it’s like Christmas morning when the e-mail comes with all the film scans. Yes, there are lots of shot that I didn’t get the lighting right or I cropped weird. But there is a realness and depth with the images that gives me that same pause. And now I feel so lucky to have started down this path.
I’m still focusing on candid, real moments on the wedding day and I still love the moodiness of dark shadows mixed in with the perfect California sunlight. But now I’m just going to mix in a little film and see where the slowing down takes me.
This couple is actually already married. But you know, SEO and business stuff. I shot their wedding last year and can’t seem to stop photographing them. I feel like they are themselves all the time if you know what I mean. They were visiting our new house in Los Osos which is really close to Montana de Oro. California has been getting an insane amount of rain and the place was the most lush I’ve ever seen it. So we explored for the evening and they let me capture them once again.
Love!!!!!!! Gorgeous models and amazing work as always, Tina! ❤️
